Do-It-Yourself RV Maintenance

Want to tackle some simple RV maintenance? The following projects can be done at home, making it easy to keep your RV in great condition!

For the Roof

The roof is one of the most critical components of your RV, as it protects the interior from water damage and other elements.

Inspect the roof regularly for any signs of damage, such as cracks, tears, or loose seals. Clean the roof periodically with a mild detergent and water to remove dirt, debris, and tree sap. Consider applying a protective sealant or roof coating to prolong its lifespan and enhance its durability.

For the Tires

Every RV needs to ride on good, solid tires. Towing or driving an RV that has worn-out tires with poor pressure can lead to a blowout on the highway, which is particularly dangerous, given all the extra weight these vehicles carry.

Use a tire pressure gauge to get an accurate reading for all the tires and inflate them up to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure level.

While you’re checking the pressure, inspect the sidewalls for any cracks, and look at the tread to make sure it’s sufficiently deep and that there are no objects embedded in your tires.

For the Generator

The best way to take care of your RV generator is to make sure that it doesn’t sit too long without running. Old fuel, especially ethanol, can get sludgy and it can corrode the engine. Throughout the off-season, make sure to run your generator for an hour or so once a month to keep the fuel moving and the parts lubricated.
