Holiday Scents: DIY Holiday Wax Fire Starters

The holiday season is steeped in nostalgia for many people, whether it's cherished memories, vintage decorations, or memorabilia from childhood holidays. For many, it’s the distinct smells that come along with this time of year that can spark memories! These wonderful DIY holiday wax fire starters provide the perfect holiday scents that we’ve all come to love, and they come alive right in your fireplace or campfire!

The traditional smell of the pine Christmas tree, the delicious lingering scent of cinnamon, even a hint of citrus, are all amazing scents that we experience during the holiday season, and with this awesome tutorial, you can keep the scents going well into the new year! Here are a couple different ways to make holiday wax fire starters!

Holiday Wax Fire Starter #1

What You’ll Need:

  • Candle wax (beeswax or soy, your choice!)

  • Fragrant cinnamon sticks

  • Small pine cones

  • Bay leaves

  • Cloves

  • Cotton wicks (one for each cup)

  • Cupcake tin

  • Cupcake liners (two for each cup)

  1. Line each cup of the cupcake tin with two liners (doubled up for sturdiness).

  2. Place your fillers (pine cones, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon sticks) in the cups.

  3. Set a wick in the center of each cup with half of it hanging out (so you can light it easily).

  4. To melt the wax, bring a large pot of water to a boil, and use another pot or a bowl to create a double boiler. Melt wax in the second pot or bowl until completely melted.

  5. Pour melted wax into each cupcake liner so that the ingredients are mostly covered in the wax.

  6. Let the fire starters cool completely and store in a fireproof jar or other container until you’re ready to use them!

Holiday Wax Fire Starter #2

What You’ll Need:

  • Candle wax (beeswax or soy, your choice!)

  • Dried potpourri of desired scents

  • Cotton wicks (one for each cup)

  • Cupcake tin

  • Cupcake liners (two for each cup)

  1. Line the cupcake tin with two cupcake liners each (doubled up for sturdiness).

  2. Add a small amount of potpourri to each paper, making sure to get a variety of each scent in every cup.

  3. Place a section of cotton wick into the center of each cup.

  4. Melt the wax using the double boiler technique mentioned in the above recipe.

  5. Pour melted wax into each cup until the ingredients are mostly covered.

  6. Allow the fire starters to dry, then store in a fireproof container for later use!
