Get Climbing In the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

At National RV, we know that Michiganders are no strangers to the sight of sand dunes. With all but one side of our great state bordered by shoreline, our beautiful beaches boast some of the best sand dunes in the country. But when it comes to having the tallest dunes, we lose to an unexpected westward competitor. Remarkably, Colorado is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America, and you can see for yourself with a visit to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve!

Exploring the Dunes

Five of the dunes within Great Sand Dunes National Park reach heights over 700 feet tall, with the tallest dune in the country, known as Star Dune, towering 750 feet tall. To reach the peak of Star Dune you’ll need to embark on a 5-hour round-trip hike. The dunes in this park are a result of sand and soil deposits from the Rio Grande and winds which sweep across the San Luis Valley. The winds continue to shift and reshape these dunes daily so with each visit you’ll marvel at a changed landscape.

Outdoor Amusement

The activities offered in the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve extend beyond dune exploration. Here you’ll also enjoy incredible outdoor fun with these recreational undertakings!

Hiking: You’ll find premium hiking opportunities within the park with its extensive trail system which weaves through a variety of ecosystems and habitats. These forested paths provide ideal vistas of the dunes and the valley. See breathtaking wildflower blooms in warmer weather and beautiful snow-capped peaks in the colder months. For those looking to go on an extended hike, there are also great backpacking opportunities through the foothills and mountains.

Sandboarding: Also known as sand sledding, this board sport is slowly growing in popularity and the Great Sand Dunes National Park may very well have something to do with the rise in attention that it’s gained. While sandboard rentals are not available through the park, they can be purchased or rented from nearby retailers in the San Luis Valley. As the name implies, sandboarding is a recreational sport that mimics snowboarding, except rather than riding on snow, you ride on sand. Visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy the fast-paced fun offered with this activity!

Creek Relief: During the summer months the temperatures at the Great Sand Dunes National Park can become unbearable. And when the sand is scorchingly hot, the nearby Medano Creek becomes a cool, welcome reprieve for visitors. This seasonal stream disappears in the winter, but once summer comes the melting snowpack from the mountain creates the surging flow of water that forms the creek. Here you can enjoy splashing, skimboarding, and sand-castle building.
